This ingenious beauty product advertises some of the same benefits as its bath-time counterpart. But does dry shampoo do as good of a job as regular shampoo? The short answer is no, dry shampoo can’t replace shampooing and rinsing your hair clean.

What is dry shampoo?

These alcohol- or starch-based sprays nix the grease and oils in your hair while adding volume. Some dry shampoo products deliver the drying agents through an aerosol spray, while others provide tinted powder to match your hair color.

Fun fact: You can actually get the same effect by shaking corn starch into your hair! But using an aerosol spray is, of course, a little easier and less messy.

How does dry shampoo work?

It’s pretty simple, actually. “The alcohol or starch in the product soaks up the excess oil and grease in your hair, giving it a cleaner, fresher appearance,” Dr. Bergfeld explains.

“The scalp collects chemicals and pollutants both from the air and from cosmetic care products,” she explains. “Dry shampoo freshens your hair by removing oils, but its actual cleansing power is only minimal.”

If you’ve ever used a little too much dry shampoo, you know the feeling: Your hair looks fresher than it did before, but it feels weird — kind of grainy, almost sandy. That’s filmy residue building up on your scalp, and it can cause a variety of problems.

Dr. Bergfeld highlights some of the issues that your dry shampoo habit can cause.

1 It can irritate your scalp: In the short term, dry shampoos mask the appearance of debris in your hair, but ultimately, it becomes a contributing factor. The bottom line is that your hair can get kind of gross — and only a wet shampoo can truly cleanse your scalp. Wet shampooing cleanses the dirt, bacteria and yeast that builds up on your scalp, as well as residue from products.

“Dry shampooing has its place, but it can’t replace wet shampoo,” Dr. Bergfeld says. “Your hair and scalp need to be washed and rinsed intermittently to keep it clean.”

But Dr. Bergfeld acknowledges that there are times when dry shampoo is your best option. If you’re traveling or camping and a shower isn’t available, or if you’re injured or ill and unable to bathe, this type of product can help maintain your hair and scalp.

But only for a little while. And you shouldn’t use dry shampoo for several days in a row.

How to use dry shampoo

If you choose to use dry shampoo, here are ways to minimize its appearance and impact on your hair:

Only spray it on oily areas.

While spraying, keep the canister at least 6 inches from your scalp.

After spraying, massage your scalp to evenly distribute the product down to your roots.

Carefully and gently brush through any patches where you’ve accidentally added too much dry shampoo.

The importance of colon cancer screenings

Screening for colon cancer is vital because symptoms often don’t appear in the disease’s early and more treatable stages. “It’s the best way to identify issues ahead of any problems,” says Dr. Kanters.

Colorectal cancers typically begin as growths called polyps, which form on the inner lining of your colon or rectum (anus). Finding and removing polyps before they become cancerous is the most effective way of preventing colon cancer.

The five-year survival rate for colorectal cancer is about 90% when the disease is found early. Here’s the concern, though: Only about 4 of 10 colorectal cancers are detected at this stage.

Types of stool tests

Stool tests are promoted as easy, at-home ways to check for potential signs of colorectal cancer. But it’s important to note their limitations in detecting precancerous polyps compared to a colonoscopy.

“Relying on these fecal tests means that you’re potentially missing out on an early pre-cancer that could be eliminated and never turn into something scarier,” explains Dr. Kanters.

There are three primary stool tests offered. Each asks you to collect a stool sample during a bathroom visit and send it to a lab for analysis.

Fecal immunochemical test (FIT)

The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) looks for hidden blood in your stool that could be coming from colon cancer. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4189821/ Studies show that FITs can be nearly 80% accurate in detecting colorectal cancer. The test should be done annually.

Guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT)

Stool DNA testing

Is a stool test as good as a colonoscopy?

While stool tests can be effective, a colonoscopy remains the gold standard for cancer screening, stresses Dr. Kanters. “In my mind, a colonoscopy is always the way to go,” she says.

Q. How much sleep do adults really need?

A. The amount of sleep you need varies with age. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that people 18-64 years old get seven to nine hours each night. Adults 65 years and older need seven to eight hours per night.

Q. What’s a normal level of fatigue for an adult?

A. Feeling tired is one of the most common complaints doctors hear about. And fatigue is normal if you had a late night and then feel tired the next day.

But fatigue (either normal or extreme) can become a concern when it affects your health and safety. For example, it’s a problem if you’re likely to doze off in situations where you need to maintain alertness, such as while driving or operating heavy machinery.

So talk to your doctor if fatigue is compromising your safety. Your doctor will also want to know how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms to help determine the cause of your exhaustion.

Q. Why am I so tired?

A. Certain lifestyle choices and habits can affect how rested you feel. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/12148-sleep-basics Poor sleep hygiene, shift work, jet lag and substance use (including alcohol and narcotics) can all contribute to extreme fatigue.

Drink caffeinated beverages after lunch.

Q. How do you know if fatigue is a sign of a possible health issue?

A. Signs that your fatigue could be a symptom of something more include:

Lack of physical or mental energy.

Inability to stay awake and alert or initiate activity.

Unintentionally falling asleep or falling asleep at inappropriate times.

Reduced capacity to maintain or complete an activity.

Becoming easily fatigued.

Difficulty with concentration, memory or emotional stability.

Tiredness affecting your ability to work, socialize and participate in family activities is also a red flag — as is you or your family needing to make accommodations to deal with your symptoms.

Q. When should you see a doctor for your fatigue?

A. Talk to your provider as soon as you or those around you experience any amount of concern. Simply expressing the problem should lead to a discussion about the topic. 

Your provider will likely want to evaluate you to determine the severity of your symptoms and potential causes. Typically, the evaluation starts with a thorough history and physical exam.

Doctors also use specific questions to measure how tired you feel. Terms like “feeling tired,” “experiencing fatigue,” “having lack of energy” and “feeling especially sleepy” are often used interchangeably. However, it’s important for your provider to distinguish between them to figure out the cause.  

Based on your responses, your doctor can figure out the appropriate approach for diagnosing you. You may need additional testing, such as lab work, imaging or sleep studies, to determine the cause. Once your provider gets to the bottom of the fatigue issue, they can work with you on how to solve it.

When it comes to body acceptance, two camps of thought seem to dominate the conversation. Some people subscribe to body positivity, or loving their bodies regardless of shape, size, color, gender or ability. Others embrace body neutrality, which focuses on appreciating what the body can do.

Origins of the body positivity movement

“In a larger context, body positivity is a social movement that advocates for the acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender or physical abilities,” says Dr. Albers. She adds that this movement challenges unrealistic beauty standards and ideals. “The central concept is the idea that beauty is constructed by society and it should not determine someone’s self-worth or value.”

Many say that the fat rights movement of the 1960s gave way to body positivity. After reading an article about anti-fatness and diet culture in the United States called “More People Should Be FAT!”, Bill Fabrey reached out to its author, Lew Louderback. Both men were tired of seeing people who were fat mistreated, so they worked together to organize a small group of like-minded people. This group became known as the National Association to Aid Fat Americans and they worked to improve life for the fat community through education and advocacy. While the movement was off to a solid start, The Fat Underground, a feminist group out of California, wanted to see even more change. The group wanted equal rights for fat people and saw diet culture as an enemy of the community. Their Fat Liberation Manifesto motivated others to work with them and demand more inclusion. Their efforts ended up making a substantial impact in the United States and around the world.

The current body positivity movement

As more people started interacting online between the late 1990s and early 2000s, https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-to-do-if-your-child-is-bullied/ cyberbullying and body shaming became the norm. To block out the negativity, fat activists and their allies became more vocal — and visible. While society might have wanted them to hide in the real world, the fat community wasn’t hiding on the internet. As they celebrated their bodies and style, this empowered others to take part and embrace who they were.

Criticism of the body positivity movement

While its overall intention was good, the body positivity movement has gained some criticism over the years. Some have pointed out that the movement often leaves people of color, https://health.clevelandclinic.org/lgbtqia-healthcare/ people living with disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community out of the conversation. These groups were very instrumental in helping the fat acceptance and fat liberation movements gain momentum.

Another criticism is that body positivity can be very unrealistic at times.

“Body positivity is a subset of toxic positivity,” notes Dr. Albers. “Some feel that it blames people for how they feel based on their mindset. It can also push people into trying to feel something that they don’t.”

According to Dr. Albers, while body positivity’s intentions are admirable, unconditionally loving one’s body and appearance can seem unrealistic to a lot of people, particularly because so many report being unhappy about them.

“Body positivity wouldn’t even be needed if we appreciated and found all bodies inherently beautiful. Society is reflective of what our culture and environments teach us to believe — to dislike our bodies for so many reasons,” explains Dr. Albers.

How did the body neutrality movement start?

Body neutrality doesn’t mean that you feel meh about your body 24/7. It also isn’t centered on appearance.

“Body neutrality is a middle-of-the-road approach between body positivity and body negativity,” says Dr. Albers. “As the term suggests, it is neither loving nor hating your body. It’s based on the notions of acceptance and having respect for one’s body rather than love.”

It’s believed that the term “body neutrality” started popping up online around 2015. It became even more popular when Anne Poirier, a certified intuitive eating counselor and eating disorder specialist, started using the phrase to help clients build a healthier balance between food and exercise. Poirier defined body neutrality as “prioritizing the body’s function and what it can do rather than its appearance.” According to Poirier, we don’t have to love or hate our bodies. We can feel neutral about them.

“The approach acknowledges that your body is only one part of who you are — not the totality. It also shouldn’t dominate how you feel about yourself,” says Dr. Albers. Another thing to keep in mind is that your body is largely influenced by genetics and that’s all out of your control. “You can’t change or manipulate it and trying to do so can cause harm,” she adds.

How body positivity and body neutrality differ

The key difference between these two movements rests in the idea of value.

“The body-neutral approach leans toward the belief that it doesn’t matter if you think your body is beautiful or not. Your value is not tied to your body nor does your happiness depend on what you look like. A body-positive approach says you are beautiful no matter what. Period,” Dr. Albers explains.

Pros and cons of body positivity and body neutrality

Which movement should you follow? It all comes down to your preference and how you feel about your body. Here, Dr. Albers highlights some pros and cons of body positivity and body neutrality.

If you like affirmations, go for body positivity

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/do-positive-affirmations-work/ If you’re inspired by positive thoughts and affirmations, body positivity might be your thing. Dr. Albers says positive thoughts can help your mood and rewire negative thoughts. Body positivity can also help dissolve thoughts that we might have picked up from childhood or society.

“A ‘pro’ of body positivity is that it can help chip away at thoughts that come from diet culture — the ones that make us believe that our bodies are not worth loving unless they are a particular shape or size,” she says.

If affirmations don’t seem authentic, try body neutrality

On the other hand, if positive affirmations seem a little too “Stuart Smalley” for you, body neutrality may be the place to start.

“Being positive when you truly don’t feel that way might seem inauthentic and not coherent with how you genuinely feel. It’s a huge leap from ‘I hate my body’ to ‘I love it.’ By going in the direction of ‘I can accept my body,’ you take out any indication of ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ And that might simply be closer to where you are,” Dr. Albers says.

Body neutrality can help you work through your feelings

Another positive of body neutrality is that it’s realistic and obtainable for many. Dr. Albers says it also makes you unpack some of the feelings that you have about your physique.

“Body neutrality makes you dig deep and ask those questions about how you came to adopt and internalize the unrealistic beauty standards and ideals,” she explains. “It gives you a break from that nagging inner voice because you simply choose not to entertain it. This allows you to devote more time and energy to other important things in your life.”

But a downside of body neutrality is that it can keep you stuck in a vortex of missing the truly beautiful and lovely things about yourself.

Body positivity could cause people to hide their true feelings

And yet, https://health.clevelandclinic.org/why-good-vibes-only-isnt-always-a-good-thing/ the “good vibes only” feel of body positivity could lead to more complex issues.

Dr. Albers explains.

“Telling people to love their bodies when they truly don’t can teach people to further suppress their feelings. Suppressing emotions is linked with higher levels of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and sometimes, in the extreme, suicide.”

How body positivity can affect people who are living with eating disorders

Good intentions and burying true feelings can be overwhelming for someone who is living with an eating disorder. Dr. Albers says that body positivity can be a huge leap from where someone genuinely is. “You can’t force a positive feeling when it just isn’t there. Pretending can do more harm than good. It can lead someone to feel guilty, ashamed and more depressed,” cautions Dr. Albers.

How to find a healthy balance between the two

There’s nothing wrong with embracing a little bit of body positivity and a little bit of body neutrality at the same time. You can try applying them when and where they make the most sense.

“It can be helpful to hang body-positive affirmation statements in easy-to-see locations like your mirror, refrigerator or on your desk. These messages will seep into your subconscious every time you take a glance at them,” suggests Dr. Albers.

These statements could include:

I am beautiful/handsome.

I love my body.

I am perfect as I am.

I am happy with how I look.

I like the person I see in the mirror.

I am proud of my body.

You might even want to get a little more social with your affirmations.

“A body-positive approach would be to add some positive affirmations to your social media feed. You might even take  unfiltered, natural pictures of yourself having fun versus staged photos at your best angle. Also, acknowledge in your posts what you appreciate about your body. This helps other people to see that it is OK to like your body,” she adds.

Mindfulness plays a major part in body neutrality

“A lot of body dissatisfaction comes from comparing yourself to what your body looked like in the past. Instead, mindfulness trains your mind to focus on right now — and what you currently look like,” encourages Dr. Albers. She says mindfulness is rooted in the language of nonjudgment. It’s just observing, being aware and taking note. This assigns no value or indication of whether something is good or bad.

Examples of body-neutral statements that we can use include:

I accept my body as it is.

My body helps me in many ways.

How can I honor my body today?

My body works hard and deserves kindness.

I am thankful for my body because it does so much for me.

All bodies are different and that’s totally fine.

6 ways to help kids develop a positive body image

Sometimes, we say things about our bodies and we don’t even realize how our words can affect how our little ones see themselves. Dr. Albers offers these tips for how we can be better examples for our children.

1 Stop the diet chit-chat. The drives the issue of feeling bad about your body. Diets give the idea that you have to change your shape or size — and kids often pick up on this.

2 Remember your kids are listening to every word you say. They absorb and reflect the way you talk about your body. The more positive and neutral words of acceptance you say out loud, the better.

This acknowledges that you don’t have to decorate your body. You can wear things that help you move, relax and feel at ease. When your child sees this, they’ll follow your lead.

4 Teach kids to focus on what the body does rather than what it looks like. You can do this by saying things like, “Wow, your legs run so fast,” or “Your eyes help you to read (vs. ‘they’re so pretty’).”

5 Pay attention to what your children are following on social media. Consider if the images and messages they‘re consuming are advocating positive body acceptance or not.

6 Don‘t stand by when someone is criticizing their body. Be a good role model and demonstrate how to talk about your body either with positive or neutral words.

When we feel anxious, our bodies respond in physical ways. Sweaty palms, shaking and an upset stomach can set in. And it’s not uncommon to feel a pounding or fluttering in your chest, also known as a heart palpitation.

Cardiac electrophysiologist John Bibawy, MD, explains why this happens and what to do if you notice palpitations when you’re anxious.

What are heart palpitations?

“When you’re resting, you usually don’t feel your heart beating,” says Dr. Bibawy. “When you can feel your heartbeat, you’re having palpitations. Sometimes they’re expected, like after exercising. But other times, palpitations hit without warning.”

You might feel palpitations in your chest, neck or throat, and they feel like your heart is:

  • Fluttering.
  • Pounding.
  • Racing.
  • Skipping.

Does anxiety cause heart palpitations?

Anxious feelings engage your body’s “fight-or-flight” response. Fight-or-flight triggers a series of events in your body, including the release of certain hormones. Experts believe this response was helpful in ancient civilizations when humans had to fight or run from threats to survive.

Today, your fight-or-flight response works the same as it always has. It just doesn’t know the difference between a grizzly bear attack or an upcoming work presentation. So those same hormones — like adrenaline — kick in to protect you.

“The fight-or-flight response speeds up your heart rate, so your body gets more blood flow,” explains Dr. Bibawy. “The increased blood flow gives you a burst of energy to fight or run from danger. That’s why many people notice palpitations when they’re scared, nervous or anxious — and it’s completely normal. It doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with your heart.”

When palpitations trigger anxiety

Fight-or-flight isn’t the only time heart rate and anxiety may overlap. Some people notice their heart speeding up or fluttering, which triggers fear or anxiety.

“People who have an arrhythmia — an abnormal heart rhythm — might experience sudden palpitations,” says Dr. Bibawy. “They understandably get nervous because they don’t know why these palpitations happen. The palpitations may cause anxiety, and anxiety causes more palpitations. This creates a cycle that’s hard to break.”

Is anxiety bad for your heart?

Nearly everyone experiences anxiety and stress at some time. A healthy heart can handle the heart racing with occasional anxiety and stress.

But if you have a heart condition like coronary artery disease or heart failure, work with a doctor to manage it. In these circumstances, anxiety and a fast heart rate can trigger chest pain.

“People with certain heart conditions may take prescription medications that keep their heart rate low,” says Dr. Bibawy. “The medications prevent a fast heart rate or palpitations if you get scared, for instance. If your heart condition is under control, then having occasional anxiety won’t be a problem.”

Frequent anxiety is another story. Chronic stress and anxiety aren’t good for your heart — or your health in general — so don’t let it slide.

“Untreated anxiety disorders can raise your blood pressure, lower your quality of sleep and interfere with your enjoyment of life,” says Dr. Bibawy. “See your healthcare provider if you frequently feel anxious or think you might have an anxiety or panic disorder. Treatments are available.”

How to stop palpitations from causing anxiety

Nearly everyone faces an anxiety-provoking situation at some point. Maybe you’re about to meet your future mother-in-law, or you have a performance evaluation at work. Whatever it is, there are some ways to help calm that fight-or-flight response and slow your heart rate:

  • Start with breathing: When your heart speeds up, your breathing will, too. But you can hijack this process by taking control of your breath. Take slow, deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Do this at least 10 times, preferably for several minutes.
  • Focus your mind: When your heart is racing, your mind might follow. Try focusing on an image, phrase or sound that makes you feel peaceful. Keep taking your slow, deep breaths as you meditate on this one thing. Tip: Do this even when you’re not stressed to help with everyday well-being.
  • Take a walk: If you can, go for a short walk. Down the hall is good, but outdoors in nature is even better. Don’t make it too fast, or your heart won’t have a chance to slow down.
  • Hydrate: Dehydration can make palpitations worse. Have a glass of water — or if you’ve been exercising heavily, try a sports drink with electrolytes. Avoid caffeinated drinks, which can trigger more anxiety and palpitations.

Getting care for anxiety or palpitations

Nearly everyone experiences anxiety and a racing heart on occasion — it’s part of being human. But don’t ignore frequent anxiety or palpitations. Your doctor can help you discover the causes and provide treatment if needed.

Most of the time, palpitations are just a sign that your heart is temporarily working a little harder. But sometimes, palpitations can be a sign of a heart condition like an arrhythmia.

“If you’re having palpitations, mention it to your doctor,” says Dr. Bibawy. “A cardiologist can find out what’s causing the palpitations or rule out health conditions. And if your palpitations ever cause dizziness or fainting, see a doctor right away.”

While you may believe that continuing to think and rethink about things that bother you is problem-solving, this habit of overthinking doesn’t usually provide any resolution.

Registered psychotherapist Natacha Duke, MA, RP, talks about whether overthinking is a mental illness and steps you can take to stop overthinking.

Is overthinking a mental illness?

No, overthinking isn’t a recognized mental health condition, but it can be a symptom of depression or anxiety.

“Someone can develop GAD due to their genes. Or it could be personality factors like the inability to tolerate uncertainty in life. And it could be life experiences,” says Duke. “Normally, it’s a combination of all three.”

Those with GAD may experience:

  • Worrying excessively about several things for at least six months.
  • Difficulty controlling anxiety, which can interfere with the ability to function.

What does overthinking look like?

If you tend to overthink, you might experience the following:

  • Worrying that jumps from one topic to the next.

  • Trouble concentrating.
  • Feeling on edge.
  • Seeking repeated reassurance from others.

“What happens is a chain effect,” explains Duke. “You’ll start worrying about one thing, and then you’ll be worried about something completely different. You might start worrying about work and then you’ll start worrying about money. And that leads to worrying about losing your job.”

Overthinking vs. problem-solving

Problem-solving is a great skill to have and can be very productive. It can be easy to believe that all of your worrying and overthinking is actually problem-solving. But there’s a key difference.

“When a problem presents itself, brainstorming possible solutions is a positive coping strategy,” says Duke. “With overthinking, what happens is that you ruminate, which is where you go over and over a problem again and again. But there’s no real resolution. You get caught up in the thinking loop and you end up where you started. In some cases, you may even end up with more worry and anxiety.”

You want to focus on problem-solving what is within your control and practice letting the rest go. Whether you spend 20 minutes or two hours ruminating on a problem, it won’t provide the relief and satisfaction you hope for. So, do your best to recognize when you’re overthinking and distract yourself until you’re ready to tackle the problem in a helpful way.

What can you do to overcome your overthinking?

If you notice yourself overthinking, there are steps you can take to limit your worrying and cope in a healthier way, says Duke.

If you struggle to turn off your thoughts at night or your overthinking is interfering with or affecting your daily life, talking to your doctor or a therapist can help.

Most people have basic staples like ibuprofen and aspirin in their medicine cabinets. However, if you’re being treated for a heart condition, those staples may not be good for you.

“Studies have found that these common medications can increase risk of bleeding, clotting, arrhythmia and even death for some heart people,” says cardiologist Stephen G. Ellis, MDhttps://my.clevelandclinic.org/staff/1214-stephen-ellis

Dr. Ellis goes into depth about which common medications to avoid and why.

Medications to avoid if you’re a heart patient

1. Aspirin

If you’re on blood thinners, beware of aspirin.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6697456/#:~:text=Aspirin%20100%20mg%20monotherapy%20and%20DAPT%20are%20associated%20with%20the,post%20initiation%20of%20antiplatelet%20therapy.Research shows aspirin combined with antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel (Plavix®) and anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin®) increase your risk of bleeding.

“Typically, a patient who has had a stent procedure is placed on an antiplatelet drug and aspirin,” says Dr. Ellis. “But if they are also taking an anticoagulant — for atrial fibrillation or because they’ve had a valve replacement, for example — they may be safer without aspirin.”

While all three medicines help prevent blood clots, taking them at the same time can be too much of a good thing.

“It’s important that all stent patients must take antiplatelet medication to help maximize the success of their procedure,” stresses Dr. Ellis. “But taking aspirin isn’t always necessary — especially if you’re also taking an anticoagulant.”

If you take blood thinners, talk with your doctor before taking aspirin as well. 

2. NSAID pain relievers, such as naproxen and ibuprofen

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/atrial-fibrillation-dispelling-6-myths/ If you have atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and are on blood thinners to lower your risk of blood clots and stroke, beware of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs include common pain relievers naproxen (Aleve®) and ibuprofen (Advil®).

“These drugs, which are available over the counter and are used commonly to relieve the aches and pains that all of us have, are also blood thinners,” says Dr. Ellis. “If you combine them with prescription blood thinners, you could have serious bleeding.”

3. Certain antibiotics

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/whats-the-difference-between-sudden-cardiac-arrest-and-a-heart-attack/ If you are at high risk for arrhythmia, look out for certain types of antibiotics because some can disrupt your heart’s electrical activity and lead to a (sometimes lethal) rapid heartbeat.

“Usually, arrhythmia is triggered by multiple factors, not just an antibiotic,” says Dr. Ellis. “The risk of a dangerous effect from an antibiotic is highest in people who have heart disease, but everyone should be aware of it.”

4. Antihistamines

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/otc-allergy-and-cold-medications-may-be-bad-for-your-heart/ Antihistamines are generally taken to treat allergies, cold, runny nose, etc., and are safe for heart patients to take unless you’re already on medication to treat high blood pressure. The combination of antihistamines and blood pressure medication can actually cause unexpected spikes in blood pressure. In addition, the use of antihistamines and certain antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin) can lead to serious arrhythmias. 

5. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)

If you have issues related to stomach acid, you may be inclined to take PPIs, drugs that reduce stomach acid production. But if you’re a heart patient who has been stented and take blood thinners, PPIs can reduce the effect of your blood-thinning medication.

The effects are usually mild, but can also pose a problem if combined with other blood thinners.

At the end of the day, make sure to clear any antibiotics or OTC drugs with your doctor before taking them.

Excessive fatigue, sleeping problems and trouble concentrating — especially after having an infection or being overwhelmed by stress? Many patients with these complaints have been told that the cause is adrenal fatigue. And they struggle to get relief. 

But the problem with the term “adrenal fatigue,” which is not an officially recognized diagnosis, is that it has been used to describe a group of symptoms when nothing else can be used to explain it.

Q: Is it possible for your adrenal glands to be truly fatigued?

The digital age has made it easy to overanalyze every ache and pain. Self-diagnosis is only a few Google searches and mouse clicks away. One minute your shoulder hurts and after a few searches, you’re now convinced you need invasive surgery to remove a rare tumor.

“It’s important to note that it’s not either or,” says registered psychotherapist Natacha Duke, MA, RPhttps://my.clevelandclinic.org/canada/staff/duke-natacha “Someone can have a medical condition and have somatic symptom disorder. The determining factor is that their worry is excessive.”

These health anxiety disorders can occur at all stages of life, but usually begins by 30. They affect approximately 5% to 7% of adults. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/9536-anxiety-disorders Like other anxiety disorders, somatic symptom disorder and illness anxiety disorder have a higher prevalence in women.

Duke explains what health anxiety is and how it can be treated.

What is health anxiety?

If you feel anxiety when it comes to your health, you may have illness anxiety disorder or somatic symptom disorder.

“In both these disorders someone is excessively preoccupied and worried about their health — far beyond what is reassured by medical experts,” explains Duke. “Someone with somatic symptom disorder would be experiencing physical symptoms, which may or may not be due to a medical condition. While those with illness anxiety disorder would be worried about their health in the absence of physical symptoms even after repeated reassurance.”

Like other anxiety disorders, individuals with somatic symptom disorder or illness anxiety disorder usually have some awareness that they’re worrying excessively. 

“There’s usually a part of the individual that knows their worrying is out of proportion and another part that can’t tolerate any uncertainty when it comes to their health,” notes Duke.

An individual must be experiencing significant physical symptoms and debilitating worry for at least six months before a somatic symptom disorder diagnosis can be made. 

With illness anxiety disorder, it’s also a six-month timeline. But the individual has a preoccupation with having or developing an illness, although there aren’t any physical symptoms present or only mild ones.

Individuals with illness anxiety disorder are hypervigilant about any changes in their bodies. This may lead them to seek repeated reassurance from medical professionals, or in some cases, avoid care out of fear.

What’s the difference between health anxiety and an overall concern for your health?

To someone with illness anxiety disorder, worrying about a headache can spiral into fear they have a brain tumor. 

“What you often see happening with illness anxiety disorder is that the anxiety will jump around,” explains Duke. “They may be worried about a brain tumor and then they develop a cough and suddenly they’re worried about lung cancer.”

Like other anxiety disorders, health anxiety comes in varying degrees.

“We all have different personalities and some of us are always going to be more anxious than others,” says Duke. “But anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes in someone’s functioning.”

While it’s smart and proactive to seek medical advice if you’re concerned about your health, those with health anxiety often worry and think they’re sick even after reassurance from their doctor and negative test results.

In factitious disorder (formerly known as Munchhausen syndrome), a person is faking an illness and is aware it’s not real.

What are the symptoms of health anxiety?

If you have illness anxiety disorder, you may experience the following:

  • Preoccupation about getting or having an illness.
  • Lack of symptoms or mild symptoms.
  • Anxiety that’s disproportionate to symptoms or risk of illness.
  • Hypervigilance about health and repeated checking for symptoms.
  • Avoidance of medical care due to anxiety or frequently seeking medical care, despite repeated reassurance.

If you have somatic symptom disorder, you may experience the following:

  • One or more persistent physical symptoms that cause distress and interfere with functioning.
  • Excessive anxiety about health and symptoms or excessive time spent thinking of symptoms or seeking medical care.

Can health anxiety cause physical symptoms?

Those with illness anxiety disorder have an unrealistic fear of a medical condition. They may view normal body functions as a sign of something more serious.

But those with somatic symptom disorder worry about their health just like someone with illness anxiety disorder, but they experience true physical symptoms.

Common symptoms include:

Sometimes, there’s no medical explanation for their symptoms. And if there’s a cause for their symptoms, they struggle to keep their worries in check.

“In the past, health anxiety disorders were often reserved for those who didn’t have a medical condition,” says Duke. “But now being told you have health anxiety no longer discounts the possibility that you may also have a medical condition.”

Health anxiety causes

What causes someone to develop health anxiety? Here are a few factors.

COVID-19

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8233051/ A study explains that those with COVID-19 have a high risk of developing somatic symptom disorder. The disease is still being researched and there’s a lack of understanding about the long-term effects of COVID-19. 

“Pandemics will inevitably have an impact on the mental health of the general population, including higher incidence of anxiety, depression and somatic symptoms,” says Duke. 

During the first year of COVID-19, the global occurrence of anxiety and depression increased by 25%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This was due to the social isolation, fear of getting sick, loss of loved ones, changes to routine and much uncertainty that comes with a pandemic. 

“In many ways, COVID-19 is the perfect storm for developing a health anxiety disorder,” states Duke. “I have seen many patients present with increased health anxiety over the course of the pandemic.”

Cyberchondria

Do you scour the internet to find information about an illness you think you have?

“The internet doesn’t usually cause health anxiety, but it certainly does exacerbate it,” says Duke.

Many health anxious people are turning to the internet to reduce their anxieties, but instead, they’re making it much worse. 

“They’re looking for reassurance, but instead they’re reading about vague symptoms that could have dozens of possible causes,” says Duke. “And if you’re health anxious you’re going to latch on to the worst one.”

The internet gives people the small possibility and chance that they’ll actually be diagnosed or cured with certain treatments. It reinforces the behavior and fear. Often, people return to the “what ifs” of their health. What if I have a rare disease? What if the doctors miss something?

Interacting with online accounts of others who were “finally diagnosed” after many years of being misunderstood could fuel this style of wondering.

Negative health experiences

If you’ve had any past experiences with a serious illness as a child, you may be scared or worried about any symptoms you experience as an adult. Those who’ve been abused as a child may also experience health anxiety as they get older.

Even if you’ve had a family member who worried excessively about their health, it could have made an impact on how you view symptoms and medical care.

“Having a family member go through a serious or prolonged illness when you are young can cause health anxiety to develop,” explains Duke. “You may have felt helpless and may grow up being worried that you will develop a similar illness.”

How is health anxiety treated?

Somatic symptom disorder, hypochondriasis, health anxiety, illness anxiety disorder — whatever term it’s referred to — the main goal of treatment is to increase the individual’s quality of life.

Often, those who have a health anxiety disorder have disrupted their lives with the time and money spent chasing a health concern. 

“If someone presents with health anxiety, I always insist they seek a medical evaluation first,” stresses Duke. “If their doctor has ruled out a physical cause and we’re confident that this is illness anxiety, they will likely benefit from treatments like psychotherapy and mindfulness.” 

In cases where there are physical symptoms present, it’s important that the treatment plan includes both medical and mental health treatment. 

“Health anxiety is tricky because you want to assure that the person’s symptoms are being addressed appropriately and at the same time that they are learning to develop more balanced thinking when it comes to their health,” adds Duke.

Psychotherapy

Your doctor may suggest a specific type of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/21208-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-cbt CBT emphasizes the connection between your thoughts and feelings. It can help you develop more logical, evidenced-based thinking when it comes to your health.

“With CBT, you learn to challenge your negative thoughts about your health and consider alternate explanations for your symptoms,” says Duke. “You also learn what behaviors are maintaining your health anxiety and positive coping strategies.”

Medication

If CBT and other methods aren’t working, your doctor may recommend medication. Options may include antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

“Psychotherapy is as effective as medication for mild to moderate anxiety,” says Duke. “In more severe cases a combination of therapy and medication is usually recommended.”

Do you think you suffer from health anxiety?

It’s not uncommon to hear about a condition or read about the symptoms and think it applies to you. Suddenly, you get this strange and nagging feeling that you’ve developed said condition out of the blue.

Medical students often perceive themselves to be experiencing the same symptoms of the disease that they’re studying, researching, reading and learning about.

“The more we focus on something, the more it expands in our minds,” says Duke. “Repeatedly reading about an illness can activate our threat system, even if no real threat exists.”

If you find yourself stressing about your health in an obsessive manner, Duke recommends weighing the evidence. 

“Consider the evidence for and against your negative health thought and you will likely come to a more balanced perspective, which allows you to problem solve,” she says.

After seeking a medical evaluation, it’s important to externalize your feelings. Resist the urge to keep things inside that are bothering you. Try talking to a trusted friend or seeing a mental health professional if your anxiety is growing.  

And leave the internet alone for a while.

“The internet won’t provide more than momentary reassurance,” Duke notes. “It’s like going down a rabbit hole of anxiety. Instead, try positive forms of distraction like exercise and meditation.”
